When God Closes a Door: Our Adventure Among the Nakanai

Have you ever felt like you're on the verge of achieving a dream, only to see it suddenly vanish? That's what happened to us a few years ago when we were about to move to a tribe. However, for reasons beyond our control, the Lord closed that door. In an instant, our dream faded, and we were left without a plan.

The thought of starting over, finding another tribe, and building a new team felt overwhelming. We wondered if our time in Papua New Guinea had come to an end. Amid this uncertainty, my wife and I decided to sit down and clear our minds. We made a list of what we wanted to achieve in the coming years: teaching, discipleship, Bible translation in my case, ...and move to live in a tribe within a period of no more than six months.

With this list in hand, we approached our leaders for guidance. We explained our goals and asked them to consider our gifts and talents to help us decide our next steps. Their response would determine whether our time in Papua New Guinea was over or if there was a new opportunity for us.

After a few days of waiting, we had a meeting with our leaders. They reviewed our skills and gave us a list of tribes where they thought we could be useful. At the top of that list were the Nakanai, a tribe of over 45,000 people with a small group of believers but no Bible translation and a great need for discipleship.

We contacted a family working among the Nakanai, and after several weeks of discussion, we decided to join them. Thanks to God, we were warmly welcomed by the Nakanai believers. Approximately three months after God closed the first door for us with the Menguen, He opened a new opportunity among the Nakanai.

A few weeks later, we were already living and working among them, beginning a new and exciting chapter of our missionary life. This is how our story with the Nakanai began.

This journey has taught us that when God closes a door, He always opens another. It has led us to places and people we would not have met otherwise and allowed us to serve in ways we never imagined. Our adventure with the Nakanai continues, and we are excited about what God has in store for the future.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Blessings!
